DIY Window Grids
We recently completed a little DIY project with a big impact (my favorite sort of project!) in our living room. For years, I have been contemplating a way to add more character to the large picture window in that room. I have thought about the right design for this house and debated many patterns. I love old rooms full of books and character that remain true to the style of house that feel at home in the setting where the house is located. For that reason, we decided that a craftsman style grid would be our best option.
To get an idea of what the grids would look like, we used the highly technical method of scotch taping some MDF trim to the windows. Once I saw what they could look like, I knew we had to move ahead with this project. Billy brainstormed ways to attach the trim to the windows and came up with the perfect solution of using screen pins.
Here is a list of links to the exact products we used:
MDF molding 1/2 inch x 1/4 inch
We started by breaking the window into thirds lengthwise and fifths widthwise and got our measurements. We drilled holes in the end of the MDF to insert the dowels and added wood glue to join them. Then we painted the grids to match the window trim (paint color is Lichen by Farrow and Ball).
To attach the screen pins, we cut slits into the MDF using an oscillating tool and inserted the screen pin.
Next we attached the grid to the window by pushing the pin into the wood of the window frame.
We loved what they looked like so much that we decided to go ahead and add them to the rest of the windows in the room. I think that the long windows that flank the fireplace look so much better suited to the room now.
For me, it's little touches like these that make a room feel layered and collected. They make it feel like home.
